◆Example of a Gene Network: Cross-Species Network

See the figure below for an example of a gene network.
Circles, triangles, and squares represent nodes, and the lines connecting nodes represent relationships between nodes, called edges.
In this example, circular nodes represent genes, triangular nodes represent transcription factors, and square nodes represent traits or biological functions associated with the genes.
Gene names or biological function descriptions are usually written inside nodes, but they are omitted in this schematic diagram.
This example illustrates a network of two species, with genes and transcription factors of each species indicated by blue and red nodes, respectively.
Edges between circular nodes (genes) indicate expression profile similarity (solid lines), expression opposition (dotted lines), within-species homologs (double lines), and cross-species homologs (wavy lines).
Genes (circular nodes) regulated by transcription factors (triangular nodes) are shown by arrowed edges.
By referring to the traits or biological functions associated with genes (square nodes) connected to genes (circular nodes), you can quickly and easily retrieve gene function information.
Because homologous genes are more likely to retain transcription factor binding sites or gene functions, referring to homolog information can accelerate gene discovery.
Expression profile similarity and opposition provide useful information for gene discovery by suggesting functional relatedness in biological processes and enabling use of spatiotemporal expression information.
